The Best English Managers in charge of Foreign Teams in International Football

Several English managers have been fairly successful while being at the helm of foreign teams in international football. English managers are not a popular choice to lead the teams at the international or club levels. Such is understandable since they are not even the dominant figures in the Premier League. In the 2024/25 season, only three gaffers are enlisted in the English top flight.  However, the appointment of Steve McLaren as Jamaican national team coach was quite a surprise at the beginning of this season. The former Middlesbrough and Newcastle United boss had been in the dugout as a head coach any longer since 2019. In 2022, he returned to Manchester United as Erik Ten Hag’s assistant. McLaren was also infamous for his failure to lead England to qualify for EURO 2008 rather than his success in winning the first league title for Twente. Yet, it did not stop Reggae Boyz from signing him. His target would be none but guiding them to their second World Cup appearan...

The Last English Managers in the Premier League’s Big Six

The last English managers in the Premier League's Big Six mainly did not seem to have impressive spells. English managers in the Premier League are still not as many as expected. The numbers do not seem to improve. In the 2023/24, only five Englishmen were in charge of the team at the beginning of the season. Now only four remain. It is quite decreasing compared to the last five years. There were at least seven English managers from 2020 to 2023. Their number in EPL’s big six is even incredibly low. None has been appointed to be at the helm of any big clubs since Graham Potter in Chelsea two years ago. The only English boss in the top ten teams this season is Eddie Howe. The former Bournemouth boss is still in command of Newcastle United, which is not even one of the Premier League's Big Six. Next season, Manchester United could be the first elite team to be led by English managers, should Gareth Southgate accept their offer. The current Three Lions boss has been linked...

Young Managers who Moved to the Top Level too soon

Some young managers might have made a big move too soon, which impacts their career.  Being asuccessful young manager clearly leads to the opportunity to join the big league. It is surely tempting to advance their managerial career quicker than expected. This season, Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Armorim, and Bologna manager Thiago Motta have become the ones in high demand next summer. They are all under 45 years old and have been the target of big teams like Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Barcelona.  The Portuguese and Italian bosses seem to have made up their minds for their future next term, whereas the Spaniard has not made any official decisions. Alonso is expected to decide it carefully, as switching sides too soon might jeopardise his managerial career in the future.  He might need to consider Julian Nagelsmann’s case. The 36-year-old manager was in the same situation in 2021. The current Germany national team has yet to imp...

Why English Managers Barely Succeed in the Major Leagues

Most English managers barely make their mark in major European leagues, including in their own Premier League. It seems like an ironic situation for English football, as they only have a few successful football managers in the major leagues compared to their continental counterparts. Judging from the dominance of English clubs in Europe in the past decades, the rarity of English football managers in Europe shows a stark contrast. In fact, no English managers were involved in three all-English finals in the Champions League, once in the Europa League, Manchester City’s triumphant campaign with treble winners, or West Ham’s victory in the Europa Conference League last season. In the Premier League this season, only five names are registered as the team's gaffer: Eddie Howe (Newcastle United), Sean Dyche (Everton), Gary O’Neill (Wolverhampton), Roy Hodgson (Crystal Palace), and Chris Wilder (Sheffield United). Once again, none is having a continental campaign any longer after Ho...
