Top Barcelona Stars signed from Espanyol

More than 40 players were snatched by Barcelona from their city rival, Espanyol, for their first team, but only a few eventually thrived. Barcelona and RC Espanyol have been rivals for years, but it does not stop both sides from swapping players. Blaugrana did release more of their stars to their fellow Catalan side, but not exactly the opposite. Former Danish international Martin Braithwaite was the last one to play regularly for Espanyol in the 2022/23 season. This season, however, Hans Flick’s side does the opposite by signing Espanyol’s brightest talent last season, Joan Garcia. He was La Liga’s best shot stopper last season despite only helping his team finish at the lower table. In fact, Garcia is seemingly prepared to take up the number one spot from the club’s captain, Marc Ter Stegen. The German goalie has fallen out of favour under Hans Flick since his attitude ahead of the second leg of the UCL semifinal against Inter Milan last season. Should Garcia be able to p...

The Most Notable English players in Barcelona history

Only a few English players have actually played for Barcelona throughout the history compared to those signing for their archrival, Real Madrid. The headline on Barcelona’s search for a new winger following Nico Williams’ sudden snub has been all over the news lately. Blaugrana has reportedly been eyeing the new target. Liverpool’s Luiz Diaz seems to be their top priority, but The Reds would not let him go for a low price. Such poses an issue for the Catalan giant. England international Marcus Rashford becomes their next target. He provides a better option and chance to sign, as he himself is interested in moving to Catalan; his current club, Manchester United, is willing to sell him or loan him out; plus, Rashford’s versatility in all positions upfront could be a long-term solution for Robert Lewandowski’s replacement. The Polish forward has only one year left in his contract. He is already in his mid-30s too, which might not be an ideal choice to lead the line anymore along...

Remembering Peter Rufai and his intriguing spells in Europe

Peter Rufai, one of Africa’s best goalkeepers in history, who has just passed away recently, had a couple of intriguing stints in Europe. The former Nigerian international goalkeeper in the 1990s has reportedly departed following his illness lately. It is another piece of devastating news in football, as another footballer, Liverpool’s Diogo Jota, has just lost his life due to a car crash. Rufai was one of several former Nigerian squad members in the 1994 FIFAWorld Cup who had gone from this world . The other names were Stephen Keshi, Uche Okafor, and Wilfred Agbonavbare. During his playing years, the goalie who appeared in two FIFA World Cup editions, 1994 and 1998, had several spells in Europe. Although he was mainly named understudy, he had some notable moments worth remembering in his career at the club level, beside his performance with the Super Eagles in major international tournaments. Here are the highlights of the shot stopper who had royal blood from the Idimu tr...

The Best Goalkeepers of 2024/25 season in European Top Five

The best goalkeepers in the 2024/25 seasons in UEFA’s top five major leagues are surprisingly not from the big teams. The 2024/25 campaign is coming to an end with only two games left or fewer. Some leagues have found their champions, such as the Premier League, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1, whereas La Liga and the Italian Serie A have yet to see the winners. The former might be determined soon, as Barcelona is already leading seven points over their archrival, Real Madrid , on the table. However, the latter has a more thrilling title race, as it could be decided through a playoff, should Inter and Napoli share the same points. In each league, the top scorer award definitely has more exposure than the best goalkeeper. The former is often dominated by well-known names, whereas the latter is quite the opposite. This season, for example, the goalkeepers from the elite sides are barely named the best in the stats. In fact, most of them are probably beyond the fans’ expectations. The b...
