A number of Barcelona academy graduate goalkeepers have been snubbed in the first team but managed to put on a great display elsewhere.
The
Barcelona academy seems to be more famous for producing outfield players rather
than the goalkeepers. Only a few of them have been able to cement their place
in the first team as the first choice, not just being the second fiddle.
Victor
Valdés and Pepe Reina are the most recent examples. Yet, both had contrastive
stints in Camp Nou. The former enjoyed the trophy-laden years and had been the
undisputed first goalkeeper from 2003 to 2014, whereas the latter was only
given a nod as the number one shot-stopper temporarily.
This
season, another La Masia graduate goalkeeper is heading to the exit. Inaki
Pena, who was seemingly on course to be the first choice in the future after
his series of impressive form between the sticks this season following Marc Ter
Stegen’s long-term injury, has decided to move on in the summer. He is reportedly holding talks with Celta Vigo next season after losing his spot to Wojciech Szczęsny.
Pena
has yet to feature in a single game in 2025 despite playing regularly in all
competitions in the first half of the season. The former Galatasaray loanee
appeared in 22 games but only made six clean sheets.
His
performance during the crucial matches seems to become the key factor why Hans
Flick eventually turns to the experienced Szczęsny. Pena’s below-par form
against Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid in November and December 2024
justified Flick’s concern for him. Blaugrana suffered humiliating defeats in
both fixtures. Fortunately, they manage to bounce back in the second half of
the season.
Throughout
history, there have been others who experienced the same situation as Iñaki
Peña and thrived elsewhere. The 26-year-old shot-stopper could perhaps be
inspired by his notable predecessors below.
Francesc
Arnau
He was the former Ruud Hesp and
Pepe Reina understudy. Arnau was promoted to the first team in 1996 and
remained in Camp Nou till 2001. He had a chance to play quite regularly in the
1999/2000 campaign, when he was fielded 21 times in all competitions and made
eight clean sheets. Overall, Arnau only made 32 appearances for the Catalan
giant before signing for Malaga.
In Malaga, the Oviedo-born goalie
established himself as the number one. He played in 127 games with 35 clean
sheets. Arnau also helped them finish eighth in 2007/08 and ninth twice in the
2003/04 and 2010/11 campaigns, which was also his last season before hanging up
his gloves. Unfortunately, that was their best campaign during Arnau’s stint.
He never had a chance to lift the trophy, whereas in Blaugrana he only had one
silverware, La Liga 1999.
After his retirement, Arnau
mainly worked as the director of football in Malaga and Real Oviedo. However,
he tragically died at the age of 46 all of a sudden when he was still in charge
of the post in the latter club. The true reason for his departure remains
unknown up to this day.
Ruben
Martinez
He was part of the Barcelona
squad in the 2004/05 campaign as the third-choice goalie. Martinez was only
fielded three times with Blaugrana and eventually released in summer 2008 to
the Segunda Division outfit, FC Cartagena.
After his spell in the second
tier, he made his move to Malaga, where he stayed for two seasons as a second
fiddle. The former AEK Larnaca man had his best stint at Rayo Vallecano, in
which he appeared in 66 games and made 20 clean sheets. Such positive form
helped his team to sit eighth in the 2012/13 season.
After two years on the capital side,
Martinez switched sides to Almeria, Deportivo La Coruna, and Levante. He was
the first choice in those teams before his brief spells in Anderlecht and
Osasuna, where he returned to become understudy again.
Apart from his impressive stint
with Vallecano, Martinez’s memorable spell was in Belgium during the second
half of the 2016/17 season. He lifted the Jupiler Pro League trophy with
Anderlecht and helped Youri Tielemans and Co. to advance to the quarterfinal in
the Europa League. They only suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat through extra time
against the eventual champion, Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United. Overall, the
Corinstanco native shot stopper featured in seven fixtures with three clean
sheets for the Belgian powerhouse.
Toni
Jimenez
The current USMNT goalkeeping
coach was once Andoni Zubizarretta’s understudy. He was part of the squad in
the 1991/92 campaign when Barcelona won their first UCL, or still known as the
European Cup at that time.
Jimenez was then sent on loan to
the second-tier side, Figueres, before being released to Rayo Vallecano and
joining Espanyol in 1993. He stayed with Blaugrana’s local rival till 1999 for
his first stint and during the 2003/04 season for the second stint. The
shot-stopper with only three international caps contributed well to bring them
to constantly finishing in the top ten from 1995 to 1999. Their best one was in the 1995/96 campaign when they sat in fourth place.
Overall, he featured in 262 games
with 102 clean sheets. The former Atletico Madrid and Elche goalkeeper even won
the Ricardo Zamora trophy for La Liga's best goalie in 1998. Sadly, that was
his only major trophy during his career at the senior level.
Jimenez was on the verge of
winning the Copa del Rey in 2000 with Los Rojiblancos, but they lost to his former side, Espanyol, 2-1, which also ended their long title drought. At the
international level, the La Garriga-born shot stopper was well-known in the
1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. He was the first choice in Spain U23 and
played alongside the young Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique and Kiko Narvaez when
they won their first gold medal. La Furia Roja beat Poland 3-2 in a thrilling
final.
Andre
Onana
Last but not least, the
current Manchester United goalie is the most successful former Barcelona
academy player without a single game in Camp Nou but thrives elsewhere. Unlike
the previous three names, Onana has won a number of major titles, such as three
Eredivisie titles plus two KNVB Cups with Ajax Amsterdam, the Coppa Italia with Inter
Milan and the FA Cup with the Red Devils.
The Cameroon international
has played in two continental competition finals, the Europa League in 2017 and
the UCL in 2023. Unfortunately, his teams, Ajax and Inter Milan, were
dismantled by two Manchester sides, United and Man City, respectively.
Onana has always been the
number one shot-stopper in any teams he plays for. On the contrary, his spell
in Barcelona was beyond memorable. He joined La Masia in 2010 at the age of 14
but barely played regularly. In fact, he was loaned out to Cornelia and Vista
Alegre before returning to Catalan in 2014. That was the season when he made
six appearances in the UEFA Youth League. It was also Onana’s final season with
the Catalan giant before switching sides to Jong Ajax.
At the international level,
the 29-year-old goalie has earned 42 caps, including one game in the 2022 FIFA
World Cup. However, he left Qatar earlier due to his disagreement with his boss
in the national team, Rigobert Song.
