A few FIFA World Cup editions saw several teams from the British Isles
qualify in the final round.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is already around the corner, and all confederations
have completed all stages or reached the last stage in the qualifiers. UEFA is
getting ready to hold the playoff stage, which will be contested in March next
year.
For the British Isles, the World Cup in North America could be historic, as
all five teams from there could be playing in the final round. England and
Scotland have secured automatic berths, while Wales, Northern Ireland and the
Republic of Ireland still have the chance to seal the remaining berths via
playoff. They are all placed in two different pots.
They will be fighting for the two remaining berths. Wales and Northern
Ireland could be squaring off in the playoff final pot 1, provided they could
see off Bosnia and Italy in the semifinal. In the meantime, the Republic of
Ireland would have to strive to eliminate the Czech Republic in the semi-final
before facing off against Denmark.
Should that happen, it would not only be a great pride for the UK and
Ireland but also mark their improving quality across all the teams in the
region ahead of EURO 2028, which will be held in the same region.
In the tournament’s history, the British Isles have been represented by more
than two teams. In fact, it did not happen once but three times consecutively
in the past. Here are the FIFA World Cup editions with the most qualified teams
from the region.
1982 FIFA World Cup
Spain 1982 was the first time more than two teams from the UK managed to
qualify for the FIFA World Cup final round. Apart from the two default British
Isles teams which were expected to compete, England and Scotland, Northern
Ireland was able to make their return in the competition after their last
appearance in Sweden in 1958, which was also their debut.
The campaign of those UK teams was only satisfactory but not exactly
impressive. Scotland were still unable to punch their height to advance from
the group stage as they were eliminated by Brazil and USSR, whereas England and Northern Ireland did. Unfortunately,
neither was able to snatch a single win in the second group stage.
Peter Shilton and Co were unbeaten while being grouped with the host, Spain,
and West Germany. Yet, they were also unable to score a single goal in the
second round. In fact, the Three Lions were held to a stalemate in both
games.
Meanwhile, Billy Bingham’s Northern Ireland stunned the pundits with their
form at the group stage while crushing the host Spain and eliminating Yugoslavia. Unfortunately, their top form declined in the second round as they
were hapless and winless while taking on France and Austria.

Four years later in Mexico, UK once again was represented by the same three
teams. England, Scotland and Northern Ireland qualified to 1986 edition.
Unfortunately, the average performance dipped as only The Three Lions managed
to go through the knockout stage.
Gary Lineker and Co were able to advance to the
quarterfinals after clinching two important wins over Poland and Paraguay in
the final group stage game and round of 16. They only lost 2-1 to the eventual
champion, Argentina led by Diego Maradona in a closely tight games plus stained
by his controversial ‘hand of God’ goal.
Meanwhile, Scotland and Northern Ireland barely manage to
put a great form during the tournament. They were winless at the preliminary
round and headed to exit immediately.

1990 FIFA World
Cup
The Boys in Green made their debut and stunned the world as
they managed to progress further in the tournament. Jack Charlton’s men went
through the quarterfinal without even winning a single game. They advanced from
the group stage alongside England and Netherlands, edged out Romania in the
shootouts and only lost 1-0 to the host Italy.
Meanwhile, England were able to reach semifinal. It was
their best world cup campaign since 1966. Bobby Robson’s side only suffered a
loss from the eventual champions, Germany, on penalties in the final four.
